"Between Carnival and Comedy"

At the U. Nahon Museum of Italian Jewish Art in Jerusalem.

The exhibition, which will open on Purim, displays outfits inspired by the Italian street theater - commedia dell'arte and is based on Molière's famous comédie-ballet "The Bourgeois Gentleman".

The "Between Carnival and Comedy" exhibition will open on March 16th 2008 in the Italian Jewish Art in Jerusalem. There will be displays of outfits made by graduates of the Shenkar School for Design, who took a course on designing costumes for the theater. The students' work gives a contemporary interpretation of the traditional characters of the commedia dell'arte and include a ball gown made of vinyl tablecloths and plastic bags taken from the local convenience store, a noblewoman's wig made of cheap plastic dolls and additional ideas that give the exhibition a sense of humor and make it more interesting, as is the custom of Purim.

Besides the magnificent costumes, some of the museum's collection of scrolls of the Biblical book of Esther will be on display. The decorated scrolls are opulently adorned by figures and events from the book's stories, and were also influenced by the commedia dell'arte and the Italian carnivals. In honor of the opening of the exhibition and to note the Purim holiday, the museum will hold a series of events, including guided tours accompanied by ballet dancers who will play the part of characters in comedies. In addition, on March 22nd, there will be stand up shows in pubs and bars in central Jerusalem, and a central stand up show given by these comedians free of charge at 22:00 in the Museum of Italian Jewish Art.

Throughout the year, the Museum of Italian Jewish Art holds art displays dealing with the life of Italian Jews, including art displays from the renaissance and baroque eras. The museum also holds a series of activities and events.

The "Between Carnival and Comedy" exhibit will close on April 13th 2008. Additional information is available on the website: http://www.jija.org.
