The addition of thousands of hotel rooms is needed as part of the Ministry of Tourism's preparations for the arrival of approximately 5 million tourists in Israel annually. The planned hotel area will be built in an area designed for commerce and leisure near Eilat's eastern lagoon. When completed, 3,500 additional hotel rooms will be added to the existing 10,800 ones in Eilat's hotels. The eastern lagoon lies on the northern beaches of Eilat, in an area overlooking Aqaba. This area is considered one of the most attractive in the city because it overlooks the bay and the Edom Mountains. The Ministry of Tourism predicts that starting at 2012, at least 5 million tourists will arrive in Israel. This increase requires the addition of hotel rooms throughout Israel, including Eilat, which is one of Israel's most attractive tourist cities. The Ministry of Tourism works to enhance Eilat's position as a central tourist city with a series of actions, including beach development, upgrading the beach promenade and worldwide marketing campaigns.
