"Sounds of Ancient Music" Exhibition at the Bible Lands Museum in Jerusalem

The exhibition displays ancient objects on which there are images of men and women playing on rare musical instruments.

The "Sounds of Ancient Music" exhibition which recently opened in the Bible Lands Museum in Jerusalem reveals sights and sounds from far back in history through objects that depict musicians playing different and instruments as well as authentic and reconstructed musical instruments, in their natural size, preserved from ancient times until today.

The exhibition introduces visitors to music's central role in religious rituals as well as in the political and everyday events of the peoples that inhabited Israel, the near east and the Greco-Roman classical world.

At the entrance to the exhibit are multimedia stations that enable visitors to view a presentation about four types of ancient musical instruments. They can virtually play on ones such as lyre, flute and drums, thus enriching their experience of the visit. Along with the opening of the exhibit, the Bible Lands Museum held a conference on the subject of music in the ancient Near East and Mediterranean regions. Different aspects of music in the ancient world were examined in the conference, starting with the design of the instruments, the way they were played, the sounds produced from them and the place of music in the Bible and in the history of the ancient peoples. Throughout the year, the Bible Lands Museum holds lectures on subjects related to Jerusalem and its history, as well as a series of different musical events. In addition, the museum will hold a lecture on the subject of "Dionysus's Victory" given by Sir John Bodeman from Oxford to the friends of the Museum in the United States. The lecture will take place on February 3rd 2008 at 14:00 in Christie's House in New York. Information about the lecture is available on phone number 212-840-1166, extension number 112.
