The First Museum of Caricature and Comics will Open in Holon

The museum, which will open to the public on December 20th 2007, displays some of the best works of caricaturists and comics artists in Israel.

The Israeli Cartoon Museum will expose Israeli visitors and tourists from around the world to the art of caricature, with its different levels, contexts and qualities in order to promote the understanding and recognition of society's need for caricature. The museum was founded as a joint project of the Holon municipality and the Israel Caricaturist Association, and reflects this art's diverse activity in recent years.

The museum is sprawled on an area of 430 square meters, and next to it is an archive for professional use and research. During the year it will have 3 permanent exhibits which will include works of the pioneers of caricature in Israel, including Yaakov Farkash (Ze'ev), Kariel Gardosh (Dosh), Arye Navon, Shmulik Katz and Yosef Bass. Some of the pieces will be accompanied by movies about the artists. In addition, there will be an exhibit that moves through time from the Pharaoh caricature in ancient Egypt, through ancient Greece to this day. The exhibition by "Comics Group Israel" will display contemporary comics by modern young artists.

"The Past Year" will be among the temporary exhibitions. It is a tribute to Golda Meir, as part of the international women's day. Also, there will be a group exhibit by local artists titled "Working from Home".

An additional exhibit, "Figure, Image and Stereotype", will display works on the development of the image of the Israeli in caricature.

The opening event will include a caricature display "A Painter of Peace Talks" by the illustrator and caricaturist Shmuel Katz, which will also be the winner of the "Golden Pencil" award given by the museum annually to an artist's life work in caricature, illustration and comics.
